Amidst all of the change happening underfoot, having a daily herbal ritual can be one of the most grounding practices you invite into your day. While there are many other important factors and therapeutics to help keep you healthy and thriving year-round, utilizing herbs can provide a strong foundation of support especially when used in a ritual context.
While some rituals are ornate and complex, they truly don’t have to be! Practicing a daily herbal ritual can be simple, easy, and effortless once you get in the rhythm. In this article, I share with you three simple herbal rituals for practicing at home that can help keep you balanced and grounded throughout life’s changes and challenges.
1. Burning Herbal Incense.
It’s amazing how changing the air quality around you can help clear your headspace. One of my favorite herbal rituals for home is to burn a cone of herbal incense, burn a “garden wand” of dried aromatic herbs, or heat a charcoal round and drop a couple pieces of herbal resin on top to infuse the air with a delicious earthy smoke.
Sometimes the act of simply preparing the burner bowl and taking a couple of deep breaths while the herbal incense or resin burns can help calm racing thoughts from the day, allowing you to feel centered and at ease again. I always suggest cracking a window to allow some of the stagnant air to escape from the room while you burn your herbal incense.
2. Preparing A Daily Herbal Tea
Although this might sound obvious, preparing an herbal tea can be one of the most rejuvenating herbal rituals for home. On a cold winter’s day, there is nothing quite as nice as simmering a batch of herbal chai on the stove (if you haven’t tried the new Alpine Botanical’s Mountain Root Chai, you’re in for a treat!).
Even just preparing a simple cup of herbal tea and pausing for a moment to inhale the warm aroma can lift your spirits and warm the soul. The type of herbs you steep is up to you! 3. Enjoying An Herbal Smoking Blend
Believe it or not, many of your favorite herbs can also be smoked! Rolling an herbal “spliff” can be extremely relaxing to the nervous system, helping quiet an overactive mind and ease feelings of agitation. Traditional herbal smoking blends won’t get you “high,” but they can help relax muscle tension, vivify your dreams, and even enhance your ability to focus depending on the herbs you use.
